Why race?

Because… Survivor

Every minute, somewhere in the world, someone dies from breast cancer.

Breast cancer knows no boundaries- be it age, gender, socio-economic status or geographic location.

Volunteer Breast Health Educator Training

Our volunteers come in all sizes, shapes and colors, but their hearts are pink and their caring has no limit. Are you a leader, a thinker or a doer? One way to volunteer is by becomming a Trained Educator, where you staff tables throughout the Affiliate’s 31 city/county region and speak with women and men one-on-one about breast health.

The next Breast Health Educator Training will be:

Saturday, February 21, 2015
9 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

VCU: Cancer Research and Resource Center, Kennedy Hall
103 S. Main Street
Danville, Virginia 24541

Describe an uplifting moment you experienced during your time with Susan G. Komen VA Blue Ridge.

After over three years of involvement, it is really hard to pinpoint one specific moment. I have so many wonderful memories that I do not believe can be described adequately. The entire Race for the Cure event is a testament to humanity; courage, faith, strength, perseverance, generosity, and compassion. That being said, I still get overwhelmed with emotion at the start of every race. To have over 2,000 participants eagerly awaiting the start, and then watching them flood the streets of Roanoke wearing anything from pink tutu's to pink butterfly wings to even cow costumes. I guess I would describe it as an exercise in undaunted hope.

Experts say...Light at night or shift work can increase your breast cancer risk

Women who routinely work overnight shifts (such as nurses and flight attendants) over many years may have a slightly increased risk of breast cancer. One possible reason is the exposure to light related to these types of jobs. Being exposed to light throughout the night affects some hormone functions in the body that may be related to breast cancer.

Melatonin is a hormone in the body that helps control the sleep cycle. During the night, the body produces melatonin and exposure to light at night disrupts this process.

Some studies suggest women with lower levels of melatonin may have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with higher levels of melatonin.

Ongoing Partnerships

Dixie Gas & Oil Corporation

Delivering for a Cure: For every gallon of propane dispensed from the specially painted tank trucks, Dixie Gas will donate one cent to Komen Virginia Blue Ridge. Since June 2010, Dixie Gas & Oil Corporation has donated almost $24,000 to the Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate.

Recycling for a Cure

OmniSource Southeast provides metal recycling bins that are painted pink with the Susan G. Komen logo. These bins are placed throughout the facility in Vinton to receive "end of life metal" such as appliances, automobiles, aluminum cans, and any other metal recyclable items. Proceeds for the donation are send to the Virginia Blue Ridge Affiliate to help find a cure!
