Today is Triple Negative Breast Cancer Day.
Today we salute the strength of women and men fighting triple negative breast cancer (TNBC). Breast cancer was once thought of as a single disease, but we now know that it's actually a group of diseases. TNBC is one of the more aggressive and difficult types of breast cancer to treat because there are no known targeted therapies.
Roughly 10-20% of all breast cancers are TNBC, and there tends to be a higher incidence of TNBC cases diagnosed in younger women, women with BRCA1 gene mutations, and African-American and Hispanic/Latina women. It's also more likely to recur and spread than other types of breast cancer.
Maura Bivens knows firsthand how tough TNBC can be. She was diagnosed at age 38, but it returned after treatment and spread to her lungs. Maura continues to face her breast cancer with amazing courage and strength. Learn more about her story in this short video.
