Join Me in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
I personally know too many people that have been impacted by breast cancer. My mom was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer a number of years ago when she was in her 60's. She is a breast cancer survivor. Sean, my husband, lost his mom to breast cancer when he was only 18 years old. His mom was 52 years old! It has hit home again. On July 19th, 2017, I accompanied my sister Alma with her boyfriend Jeff to UCLA Hospital for oupatient breast cancer surgery. She was diagnosed with breast cancer on June 28, 2017 with Stage 1 breast cancer. She is only 46 years old with two beautiful girls (12 years old and 9 years old). This is Alma's second bout with cancer. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer about four years ago. Unfortunately, she is not considered in remission with the thyroid cancer. When she wrote in her CaringBridge journal regarding the second diagnosis of cancer, she started with a quote, "God only gives us what we can handle." She started her journal entry that "Apparently, God thinks I am a bad-ass." Hence, the name of the team, Team Alma Bad-Ass. I am starting a team to raise funds for breast cancer research in her honor. Although breast cancer research has made tremendous gains over the years, more work needs to be done. I figure I need to join this fight against breast cancer and take action. Our family history of breast cancer has increased the risk for my girls, Alma's girls, and my brother's daughter of developing breast cancer.
I have kept asking my sister what I can do to help her out. Since she has a huge support system, she has told me she has it covered with help she needs. I have had a strong desire to do something. Well, I am a runner. I have in the past raised donations for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society while running marathons. It makes sense for me to now run another marathon and make an impact in the fight against breast cancer. I will run the Ventura Marathon on October 22, 2017 in honor of my sister. I want to help Susan G. Komen save lives and end breast cancer forever.
I’m taking my first step towards a world without breast cancer by raising funds to stop this disease that affects 1 in 8 women during their lifetime. As the world’s largest and most impactful breast cancer organization, Susan G. Komen supports more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit outside the U.S. government, while providing real-time help to those facing the disease.
You can make a donation online with your credit card by clicking the button above my fundraising thermometer. If you prefer, you can mail me a check made out to "Susan G. Komen" at 872 Neptune Ave. Encinitas CA 92024 and I will turn your donation in for you. Also, please consider being part of Team Alma Bad-Ass by running or walking the Ventura Marathon or Ventura Half-Marathon on October 22, 2017. Sean,my husband, will be part or our team running the Ventura Half-Marathon. Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to join our team or if you have any questions.
Thank you for supporting me in the Ventura Marathon as I participate in support of ending breast cancer forever. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!
