COVID-19 (CORONAVIRUS) INFORMATION

Are we canceling our Event?

We are moving to a VIRTUAL Walk. In light of the recent progression of COVID-19, and the CDC guidance to postpone mass gatherings, we have made the difficult decision to transition the 2020 Sacramento MORE THAN PINK Walk to a VIRTUAL Walk. The virtual walk will commence on Saturday, May 30, 2020, through June 30, 2020, and will be held on Facebook and Instagram. We will be accepting pictures and short videos from participants during this period.

What is Susan G. Komen doing to combat COVID-19 and other viruses at our events in the future?

We will continue to follow current local, WHO, and CDC recommendations for combating COVID-19. As updates to protocol are recommended, we will provide additional information. This includes making the following special accommodations for our events:

  • Hand sanitizer stations available across event site
  • Additional hand washing stations available
  • Electronic sanitizing wipes available to cleanse shared registration items
  • Serving gloves for all volunteers handing out food or beverages

Can I still fundraise if I don’t attend an event?

Yes! While attending our event is the best way to celebrate together, you can still fundraise to help create a world without breast cancer.  At the end of the day, it’s about what we make possible together through your fundraising.

While you might not be onsite with your community, you can create a community of your own through our online fundraising tools.  Check out these tips to maximize your online fundraising:

  1. Customize your participant fundraising center so everyone knows why you support Susan G. Komen. Sharing your story is a big indicator of fundraising success, so make sure to share the link to your participant center through social media and email.
  2. Make sure you have activated your Facebook fundraiser through your participant center. Just login to your fundraising center at the top of this page and click the “Start a Facebook fundraiser” link. Make sure you invite your Facebook friends to your fundraiser and reshare often!
  3. Get creative! We know you may need to change your fundraising plans, but now is a great time to be creative with how you’ll hit your goal. Here are some upcoming events that might help you inspire others to give:

Can I still earn recognition items if I don’t attend a Race or Walk event?

Yes! All fundraisers qualify for our fundraising recognition program! For those of you who fundraise $250 and above, you will be contacted approximately 4 weeks after the event to redeem your thank you gift.

When is the 2020 Komen Sacramento MORE THAN PINK Walk™?
The virtual walk will commence on Saturday, May 30, 2020, through June 30, 2020. Spread the word!

Where is the 2020 Komen Sacramento MORE THAN PINK Walk™ going to be located?
The virtual walk will be held on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. We will be accepting pictures and short videos from participants during this period.

Will there still be a running race?
No. The vast majority of our participants over the years have been walkers. By focusing solely on a walk, we can create a better sense of community, provide a more personal and emotionally impactful experience. However, because this year’s event is virtual, you can participate at your own pace whether you prefer to run or walk.

Will the event continue to be a 5k?
This year’s Virtual MORE THAN PINK Walk event encourages all participants to walk 3 miles around your neighborhood, on a treadmill, or simply around your house. We’re encouraging everyone to move, be healthy, walk and fundraise to support breast cancer patients, survivors and metastatic breast cancer patients during this uncertain time.

How will people living with metastatic breast cancer be included in the event?
We are passionate about saving lives from breast cancer and bringing more awareness to people living with metastatic disease (which is responsible for most of the 40,000 U.S. breast cancer deaths each year), who often feel left out of many breast cancer events.

The reality is their experience inspires us to work harder and to do more. Our Virtual MORE THAN PINK Walk will include a designated week called “Hope Village Week” which is dedicated to survivors and those living with metastatic breast cancer. Funds raised will support individuals living with Metastatic Breast Cancer during this pandemic.

Do I get a t-shirt?
All registered participants will receive an event T-shirt by a variety of options (e.g. contactless Drive Thru pick up at Komen office or Doorstep drop off in the Sacramento area).

All survivors and those living with metastatic breast cancer will receive a special t-shirt recognizing their role in our virtual event.

How much is the registration fee?
With the change to a Virtual Walk, registration is now $20 for Virtual (all those age 18+) participants, and $15 for Youth (17 and under) participants. Those wishing to be recognized as a Survivor/Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer participant can register as a Virtual participant, and indicate their recognition preference during the registration process.

Is my registration fee tax-deductible?
No, your registration fee is non-refundable, non-transferable, and not tax deductible.

What is included in the registration fee?
You will get a t-shirt and a surprise gift that will be used during the weekly fun challenges on social media! Your registration is not a part of your fundraising total for the MORE THAN PINK Walk.

How can I register?

Is the registration fee changing?
With the change to a Virtual Walk, registration is now $20 for Virtual (age 18+) participants, and $15 for Youth participants. Those wishing to be recognized as a Survivor/Living with Metastatic Breast Cancer participant can register as a Virtual participant, and indicate their recognition preference during the registration process.

You must register to receive an official event T-shirt as well as other new items to be used during the virtual walk.

Why do my team members have to register?
The registration fee helps offset the costs of conducting the virtual walk. Every participant must register to receive an official event t-shirt as well as other new items to be used during the virtual walk.

Can donations made to a team be split or shared among team members?
We are unable to split or transfer donations between individual and team accounts.

Do you require fundraising?
We do encourage all participants to fundraise above the entry fee. This event is about going from awareness to taking action in this community. Just imagine the impact — if every participant raises only $100 (in addition to their registration fee), we will bring in an additional $100,000 to support local screening, treatment and educational programs in our community!

Are survivors and those living with metastatic breast cancer expected to fundraise?
We certainly encourage every participant to fundraise, as this is our signature fundraising event. Funds raised by our participants enable us to do more for research, more for our communities, more for caring for those living with breast cancer including metastatic breast cancer and more action to get us to a cure.

We find that survivors, those living with breast cancer and others that have a deeply personal connection to the cause are the most powerful and passionate fundraisers.

How is the money used? Why is fundraising important?
Fundraising will help support women and men affected by breast cancer during this pandemic. Your contributions will help provide transportation assistance, financial assistance for cost of living expenses and patient navigation to help anyone access treatment. In addition, read about how we put your fundraising dollars to work in Where the Money Goes.

Isn’t my registration fee a donation?
Registration fees provide you access to the event and help to offset the costs. This is why they are not tax-deductible donations. Your donations and fundraising help fund our work to save lives.

Does the money raised benefit people in our community?
Funds raised by the Komen MORE THAN PINK Walk series supports Komen’s mission to save lives and end breast cancer through breakthrough research and ensuring all people receive the care they need. Through your support, our neighbors will benefit from research discoveries, public policy advocacy and direct patient support services.

What is a Top Fundraiser?
Top Fundraisers are all individuals who have raised $1,000+ or more by Virtual Walk Day. Top Fundraisers will be recognized in different ways including social media recognition. This is our way of saying "thank you" for dedicating your time and energy to making an impact.

Is there a deadline for fundraising?
All donations on your behalf that are received by June 29 will be credited to your fundraising total.

When and how will I receive my fundraising recognition gift?
Participants are encouraged to fundraise until June 29. Approximately 35 days after the MORE THAN PINK Walk™, participants that have raised $100 or more will receive an email with information about their earned gift level and instructions on how to redeem. After receiving the email, participants will select one gift in their qualifying level or one item in a lower level, as gifts are not cumulative. After choosing, the item will be shipped to the registered address in our system. Susan G. Komen reserves the right to substitute an item of equal value if recognition items are unavailable. If you have any questions, please contact echandler@komennccalifornia.org.

How long do I have to collect and turn in donations to qualify for a fundraising recognition reward?
Participants are encouraged to fundraise until June 29. Approximately 30 days after the MORE THAN PINK Walk.

Are patients, survivors, and those living with metastatic breast cancer expected to fundraise?
Just like our other participants, those who’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer have an opportunity to earn fundraising recognition items for their efforts! Many of our highest individual fundraisers are survivors and those affected by metastatic disease.

Why are you changing the name from Race for the Cure® to the MORE THAN PINK Walk?
This change is part of the ongoing evolution of Susan G. Komen. MORE THAN PINK highlights the fact the organization and those who support our work are much more than a color and enables us to better connect our supporters to the full breadth of the work we do every day to help save lives from breast cancer.
The change from a Race to a Walk also aligns the fundraising event with the experience of the vast majority of our participants.

Does this mean Komen is no longer in a hurry to cure breast cancer?
Absolutely not. Our commitment to creating a world without breast cancer is stronger than ever. This new approach is part of an ongoing evolution of our organization intended to better connect the public to the impact they’re making on our work to save lives, and in turn, help us generate the critical financial support needed for us to be able to accomplish our Bold Goal to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026.

Is Komen moving away from pink?
Absolutely not. Pink is the principal color of the breast cancer movement and remains our signature color as well. This evolution helps to reinforce that the movement is more than a color and that it’s not enough just to raise awareness by wearing pink.
We will be introducing you to our pillars of our organization: Research, Care, Community, and Action. These pillars will help you and our other supporters understand the impact you make when you fundraise for this year’s event.
