Breast Cancer Doesn't Go Away Because of a Pandemic
Once again this year I'll be doing the More Than Pink Walk (formerly Race for the Cure). It's virtual this year, but on September 12th I'll be out there running. If I hit my goal and wear the pink tutu, I might get some strange looks but it will be worth it to draw attention to this cause! My Mom is a breast cancer survivor, I have a number of friends who are survivors and I've lost friends to the disease.
I had a scare last year. I found a lump right before my scheduled mammogram (which I ended up having to delay for 2 weeks because I had to reschedule it since it became diagnostic as opposed to annual and they didn't have an immediate opening). For various reasons I did not have confidence in the radiologist that I saw and so did some research and found a breast specialist who is rated highly. He (as well as his PA before him) immediately (and confidently) diagnosed it as a lipoma. I went back for a 6 month check up in July and it's all good. Through them I'm doing genetic testing to see if I have pre-disposition to any cancers.
My point in bringing this up is that I have access to and can afford to the care and diagnostics that I need. Not everyone does and in addition to providing funding for finding a cure, Komen also provides funding for diagnostics and care for those who can afford or don't have access to it on their own.
This year more than ever, this funding is desperately needed. My goal once again is $5000 and I hope that you are able to donate some to help your neighbors who can't help themselves. As always, I thank those who have donated in the past and thank in advance those who donate this year! You are all greatly appreciated!
Thank you! Karen
