Riding RAGBRAIŽ XXXVII in PINK for the Fight Against Breast Cancer

My mother lost her battle with breast cancer nearly four years ago. I remember sharing with others that this wasn’t the way I had things planned … I expected her to live to be 95 years old. But God had other things in mind, and called her home much earlier.

Mom was a registered nurse and spent many years caring for residents at the Chariton Nursing and Rehab Center in Chariton, Iowa. Later in her career when cancer was taking its toll on her own health, she worked for Circle of Friends Home Care as a visiting nurse, calling on homebound patients throughout South Central Iowa. Perhaps the most memorable example of her humility and kindness was the time that she removed her own wig to enter the home of a patient who was also undergoing chemotherapy and self-conscious about her hair loss. She was honored posthumously as one of the 100 Great Iowa Nurses for 2006, an award that recognized her for making a meaningful and lasting contribution to humanity and the nursing profession.

Earlier this year while I was out riding my bicycle, God gave me the seeds of an idea. RAGBRAIŽ is an annual seven-day bicycle ride across Iowa (http://www.ragbrai.org). This year’s route covers 442 miles from July 19 to July 25, and includes an overnight stop in Chariton, the center of Mom’s nursing career. I’ve never ridden RAGBRAIŽ before, but this is the year to honor her memory and also raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. So the day I ride into Chariton, and the day I ride from Chariton to Ottumwa, I’ll be riding in pink in her honor. Still miss you Mom!

Perhaps you could give 5˘ per mile or $22.10. 10˘ per mile would be only $44.20. For certain, a gift of any amount towards the $1,000 goal would be appreciated.

Thanks to my wife Karen, my sisters, Darla and Donna, my brother Daren and the rest of our family for the support and encouragement.
